The Fabulous, Fantastic, Far-Out Folk Art Market

The upcoming International Folk Art Market is a not-to-be-missed event for locals as well as visitors to The Madeleine Bed & Breakfast Inn.  Now in its 10th year, this festival of folk art, food, music and dance continues to get bigger and better with every passing year.  The market is the largest such event in the world, with a mission to preserve and support folk art culture and traditions of the over 54 countries represented.

This year's market features 170 different artists, showcasing and selling everything from masks to baskets, embroidery to pottery, jewelry to musical instruments and so much more.  The Folk Art Market provides a professional venue for master traditional artists to display and sell their work, as well as to demonstrate how it is created.  A full 90% of the proceeds from these sales are then brought back to communities around the world to improve the quality of life, helping to fund wells for clean water, schools, medical centers and more.

In addition to beautiful handwork from around the world are drummers, flute players, singers and dancers from continents all around the globe.  Last but not least is a vast selection of ethnic food from some of Santa Fe's top restaurants.

The remarkable success of the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market was key in Santa Fe being designated a UNESCO City of Folk Art.  The highly-acclaimed organization is also a member of the Clinton Initiative.

If you are anywhere near Santa Fe this weekend you will want to check out this fabulous event - a riot of color and sound.  Of the thousands of unique handmade pieces of folk art available, you are sure to find memorable gifts for friends, family and yourself.

Rancho de las Golondrinas Herb & Lavender Fair

The lavender is just now beginning to bloom in the gardens of The Madeleine Bed & Breakfast Inn, but lavender lovers will want to head out to Rancho de las Golondrinas this weekend for the annual Herb and Lavender Fair.  The event takes place on June 22 and 23, 2013, from 10am-4pm.

Stroll the bucolic setting of Rancho de las Golondrinas, a 200-acre Spanish colonial rancho and living history museum, while learning about the uses of lavender, buying herb and lavender products, and sipping on lavender lemonade while touring the ranch's herb gardens.  You may also choose to consult with a "curandera", a traditional herbalist and healer, make a lavender wand, and shake your booty to the live marimba music from Kumusha.

Admission is just $8 for adults, $5 for Seniors and Teens, and free for children 12 and under.   The ranch is south of Santa Fe:  Take 1-25 South, then Exit 276 and follow the signs for Las Golondrinas.

Explore the Beauty Behind Santa Fe's Adobe Walls

The flowers are in bloom at The Madeleine Bed & Breakfast Inn, providing the perfect spot for weary travelers to kick back and relax after a day of touring Santa Fe.   While our historic home and gardens are always open to the public, many of Santa Fe's most stunning homes and gardens are hidden from view behind protective adobe walls.  This July you will have an opportunity to visit eight of these notable homes and gardens, when the Santa Fe Garden Club offers it famous tour: Behind Adobe Walls.  Four spectacular homes are featured on two consecutive Tuesdays, showcasing historical homes, impressive private art collections, and a variety of memorable gardens.

The tour, which began in 1941 (with a break for the war), is the oldest and one of the most prestigious of its kind in the country. Because it is so very popular, with tickets selling out every year, you will want to make your reservations as soon as possible.  This year's tours are Tuesday, July 23 and Tuesday, July 30, 2013, with buses departing from Hotel Santa Fe at 12:30pm and returning at 4:45pm.  The price of each tour is $75 per person, per tour, with proceeds benefiting various horticultural and conservation projects throughout the state of New Mexico.  A prix-fixe lunch is available at Hotel Santa Fe from 11am-noon for an additional $20.
