Tour Santa Fe's Most Glorious Gardens

The gardens at The Madeleine Bed & Breakfast Inn, along with all other Santa Fe gardens, are now hitting their early summer peak.  Soak up the sun while relaxing in our gardens, or go further afield and take advantage of the Santa Fe Botanical Garden Tours.

These self-guided tours afford you the opportunity of admiring twelve of the best private gardens in town, including a luncheon at one of these private residences.  The tours are available on Sunday, June 5 and/or Sunday, June 12, from 1-4pm.  The gourmet picnic luncheon takes place only on June 5, at 11am.

Advance tickets are $35 for one day's tours and $65 for two tours.  Should you decide at the last minute to attend, your tickets will be $40 for one tour and $75 for both tour days.  The luncheon tickets are $25 and would need to be booked today!

Visitors and locals alike will delight in the glorious blaze of color from peonies, roses, jupiter's beard, poppies, yarrow, wisteria and much much more.  Should you be so inspired, take a quick trip out to Santa Fe Greenhouses.  They have a huge selection of plants and flowers so you can get to work on beautifying your own gardens.

Tickets are available by calling 505.988.1234 or at TicketsSantaFe.org.

Sensational Summer Spa Special at Absolute Nirvana

Here's a Santa Fe Spa Special for guest of The Madeleine Bed & Breakfast Inn, or anyone else in Santa Fe this Memorial Day Weekend needing a bit of pampering and relaxing.  Is your skin still feeling dry and rough after a brutally cold winter?  Or perhaps the dry climate of Santa Fe is making you shrivel up like a lizard, no matter how much lotion you apply!  Then book yourself a Sensational Summer Spa Special at Absolute Nirvana.  Start with a one hour Master's massage, drenching your skin with organic oils - just the thing to revive dry skin.  After a polishing scrub of your choice (brown rice powder, turmeric and sandalwood, or perhaps raw cacao and brown rice powder, for example), a hydrating steam in your own private steam shower.  You will emerge glowing and rejuvenated, ready to bare your skin this summer.

After your spa indulgence, walk your gorgeous new self down to the Plaza, just three blocks away, and treat yourself to an ice cream at Haagen Dazs - what a way to welcome summer!

One and half hours of bliss for just $140.
Special valid now through June 30, 2011.

Max's Restaurant - A Santa Fe Sensation

Every morning at breakfast and every evening at our Social Hour, we innkeepers at The Madeleine Bed & Breakfast Inn are busy giving restaurant suggestions and making reservations for our guests.  New on our radar is Max's, located at 403 1/2 Galisteo Street.  The restaurant began in 2007 in the Railyard District as a fairly casual establishment, but has undergone a transformation with the change of location and more importantly, the arrival of chef Mark Connell.

The restaurant's mission is to serve 'inspired American cuisine', and they succeed brilliantly.  With a focus on local, sustainable and season ingredients, the menu includes a wide range of options.

First course choices includes a Baby Beet and Citrus Salad with pistachios, brown sugar vinaigrette and goat cheese ($12), Two Hour Egg with Polenta Two Ways with a Wild Mushroom Ragout ($15) and a Housemade Riccioli Pasta with Crawfish, Broccoli, Feta and Olives ($12).

Entree choices include such dishes as Pan Seared Grouper with Buttermilk Spaetzle, brussels sprouts, beet puree, preserved meyer lemon ($32), Vermont Cavendish Quail with a black trumpet puree, wild mushroom stuffing, brussels sprouts and syrah reduction ($30), along with Chestmut Ravioli & Pan Seared Root Vegetables with parsnip puree, pickled pumpkin and muscat balsamic ($24).

Innovative, fresh and very much inspired, we welcome this restaurant to the Santa Fe scene.  New Mexican cooking, with its choice of green or red, enchilada or burrito, etc. is not to be missed, but Max's is a great place to choose when you just can't look at another Combination Platter.

This is a popular place, so you will want advance reservations.

Sunset Viewing in Santa Fe

The Madeleine Bed & Breakfast Inn is located smack in the heart of Santa Fe's historic downtown, which is a fabulous location.  That being said, we are not able to see any of the glorious New Mexico sunsets from the inn itself.  Rest assured, however, that there are a number of nearby options.

One is to simply walk a few blocks away and climb up to the Cross of the Martyrs, learning about Santa Fe's history from the many plaques that line the walkway.  The cross at the top of the hill was erected in memory of the 21 Franciscan priests killed during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680.  From here you can enjoy a stunning vista of Santa Fe as you gaze at the setting sun.  Bring a bottle of wine and a blanket to make it into a real event.

Another option is the La Fonda Bell Tower, now open again for the summer season.  The Bell Tower Bar is open from Monday-Thursday from 4pm-sunset, and Friday through Sunday from 2pm until sunset.  Enjoy margaritas, chips and guacamole, or whatever your heart may desire from their full bar.  The La Fonda is located right on the Plaza, at the corner of Old Santa Fe Trail and San Francisco Street, and is the oldest hotel in the city.

Model Train Show at the Fairgrounds

Many guests of The Madeleine Bed & Breakfast Inn have enjoyed riding the historic Santa Fe Southern Railway while visiting, but here is a chance for railway aficionados to enjoy a large collection of model trains.  The Santa Fe Model Railroad Club will be holding their annual Memorial Day weekend train show from May 28-30.  This is a great opportunity to see a variety of elaborate model train set-ups, in G, O and HO scales.  The highlight of this year's exhibit will be the circus train set-up - great fun for visitors of all ages.

The event, taking place at the Santa Fe Fairgrounds on Rodeo Road, is FREE and open to the public.  Hours of operation are Saturday and Sunday from 10am-5pm, and Monday from 10am-3pm.

New Exhibit at O'Keeffe Museum!

We have had a few disappointed guests this week at The Madeleine Bed & Breakfast Inn due to the current closure of the popular Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.  The museum changes out its exhibit twice a year, which allows for a constant flow of fresh material, but necessitates closures of about a week in length to facilitate the change-over.  Should you be a Georgia affectionado, you can arrange for a tour of the Research Center and Archives even when the museum is closed.  These special tours are available Monday through Saturday at 10:30am and 2pm, and Sunday at 2pm.  Reservations may be made only on the day of the tour, and you will need to be in the lobby of the museum at 10am to reserve your place.  Please note that the tours are of limited size so you will want to arrive a bit ahead of time to ensure a spot.

The current closure of the museum will be well worth it, however, as the new show, "Shared Intelligence: American Painting and the Photograph" is a spectacular endeavor.  Shared Intelligence, opening on May 20th, explores the fascinating relationship of painting to photography that occurred over the course of the 20th Century American Art scene.  On view will be 75 or so photographs and paintings of such luminaries as  Robert Bechtle, Chuck Close, Thomas Eakins, David Hockney, Sherrie Levine, Georgia O’Keeffe, Cindy Sherman, Charles Sheeler, Ben Shahn, Alfred Stieglitz and Andy Warhol.

Civil War Reenactment this Weekend

Santa Fe is a popular destination spot for history buffs, so I want to let our guests at The Madeleine Inn know of the upcoming Civil War Reenactment this weekend at Rancho de los Golondrinas.   You will get to see military drills, dramatizations of daily camp life and the reenacting of actual battles that took place in New Mexico during the Civil War.   For a real treat I would recommend booking the Candlelight Tour, allowing you to see vistas of camp life at night.  These evening tours are twenty minutes in length, with limited tickets available.  You will definitely want to book this in advance by calling 505.471.2261.

The ranch, a living history museum, is one of my favorite places to visit in and around Santa Fe.  All year long they bring history to life, whether during the Fiber Arts Festival (demonstrations of getting wool from sheep to loom to textile), Frontier Days in August and the Harvest Festival in October.  Rancho de los Golondrinas is open Wednesday through Sunday, from June through October, so you can visit the sight even without an event taking place.  However, there is nothing like being there during a reenactment of history, when the place really comes alive.
