Last Weekend of the Santa Fe Opera

It's not too late for guests of The Madeleine Bed & Breakfast Inn to purchase tickets for the closing weekend of the highly acclaimed Santa Fe Opera.  This has been a stellar season, with rave reviews for all 2011 productions.  The final weekend features the two most treasured operas of the summer, with La Boheme on Friday, August 26 and Faust on Saturday, August 27.  Both productions begin at 8am - much more civilized than those early summer productions that don't begin until 9pm.

Consider arriving early (the parking area opens 3 hours before the performance) to enjoy a tailgate supper while gazing at the stunning mountain and sunset views of this venue.  It's too late to order one of the opera's delicious tailgate dinners, but Whole Foods Market has a tantalizing deli section where you will surely find all you need for a memorable meal.

Tickets prices start at $81 and can be purchased online or by calling 800-280-465.

A Break from Indian Market

The upcoming Indian Market, now in its 90th year, is certainly the big draw for guests of The Madeleine Bed and Breakfast Inn.  However, if one day of Indian Market is enough for you, consider a trip to Georgia O'Keeffe country.  You might start with a quick trip through the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, currently showing Shared Intelligence, an exhibit exploring the strong relationship of painting to photography in 20th Century American Art.  There you will see some works of O'Keeffe, along with photographs and paintings by the likes of Alfred Stieglitz, Andy Warhol and Cindy Sherman, among others.

Following this museum tour, head out to Abiquiu (50 miles northwest of Santa Fe) to visit  Ghost Ranch for the fabulous O'Keeffe Landscape Tour.  A knowledgeable guide will take you around various areas of Ghost Ranch.  The incredible landscape of the area inspired many of O'Keeffe's most notable paintings, and the tour takes you right to the spots where she sat to do her work.  The hour long tour is $25/person and happens every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 1:30pm.

Topping off the day in O'Keeffe country would be a tour of her home and studio.  Tour sizes are limited to 12, so you will definitely want to make reservations in advance by calling 505-685-4539.  This is a terrific opportunity to gain further insight into the private life of this renowned American painter.
