A Novel Way to Bring in the New Year

Guests of The Madeleine Bed & Breakfast Inn may want to ride into the new year with a midnight excursion on the Santa Fe Southern Railroad.  These vintage trains have been authentically restored and are quite comfortable.  My family and I prefer the more modest and rustic coach train because it feels more authentic, though the Silver Class is actually a more luxurious ride.

On Friday, December 31 the train will depart from the Santa Fe Depot at 10pm, heading for Lamy.  Enjoy complimentary hors d'oeurvres, desserts, music and fun.  Just before midnight you will be given a glass of champagne, and the train whistle will blow to signal the start of the new year.  You will be brought back to the station at 12:30am.

If celebrating New Year's Day on a train sounds more appealing, you can take advantage of the "Hair O' the Dog" ride on January 1 from 1-3:30pm.  Gaze at the winter wonderland around you as you roll gently along the track, nursing a Bloody Mary or Mimosa from the cash bar.

Prices for these two events are $45 or $55 for adults, $40 or $50 for Seniors, and $30 or $40 for children ages 3-13.

Bring in the New Year with Beethoven

Music lovers at The Madeleine Bed & Breakfast Inn are in for a real treat this New Year's Eve when the Santa Fe Concert Association presents Beethovern's "Choral" Symphony No. 9.  The gala performance will take place at the historic Santa Fe Lensic Performing Arts Center at 6pm.  Should you be so inclined, there is also a New Year's Eve gala dinner-dance following the concert at La Posada de Santa Fe. Tickets are $175 per person.  You will want to call 505-984-8759 for reservations.

In addition to the evening gala performance is a 2pm dress rehearsal (just $10), allowing for an earlier and more casual opportunity to hear this magnificent concert.

Along with the SFCA Orchestra and Chorus, the evening will feature Sandra Lopex (soprano), Nina Yoshida Nelson (mezzo-soprano), Stuart Neill (tenor) and Michael Chioldi (Baritone).  Joseph Illick will be conducting for the evening.

Guests of The Madeleine Bed & Breakfast Inn can easily walk to Canyon Road to enjoy some festive evenings of holiday decorations, farolitos, bonfires, Christmas carols and refreshments.

The shops and galleries that line this historic street will be open late, while the restaurants of Canyon Road will be offering special dining deals as well.  Come get in the holiday spirit during what promises to be a wonderful evening.

If you aren't able to be on Canyon Road for Christmas Eve, these evenings will provide some of the magical feeling that draws locals and visitors alike, year after year.

Santuario de Chimayo over Christmas

The Santuario de Chimayo is a destination for many guests of The Madeleine Bed & Breakfast Inn throughout the year, but this ancient mission church, built in 1816, is particularly magical during the Christmas holidays.  During this period the church glows with the illumination of hundreds of farolitos, which line the walls and pathway to the church.

For a real treat, plan your visit for December 22, when you can be present for Las Posadas - a re-enactment of Mary and Joseph's search for a place to spend the night after the birth of Jesus.  The play, starring youths from the church's confirmation class, will begin at 6:30pm.  Afterwards, Leona's Restaurant de Chiamy will provide bizcochitos and hot chocolate.

The Santuario is also known as 'The Lourdes of the West' because of the healing powers of the earth found in the back of the church.  Also of interest are the examples of 19th century art, particularly the main altar screen which came from Mexico, as well as the altar screens from some of New Mexico's most famous santeros.
You may want to arrive in time for a visit to the chapel and Santuario, but bear in mind that they close fairly early.  The Chapel is open from 9am-4pm.  The Santuario is open from 9am-5pm.

Also of interest in Chimayo are the many weaving galleries - of particular note is the Ortega Weaving Shop where you can find traditional Chimayo weavings made by 7th and 8th generations of the Ortega family.  The shop has been open in this location since 1900!

To get there:  go north on 285/84, then turn right on NM 503 for 8 miles to County Road 98, then turn left.  You will see the entrance to the Sanctuario on the right.

Aspen Santa Fe to Perform The Nutcracker

This weekend the vibrant Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Company will be performing The Nutcracker, a holiday favorite of children ages 3 to 93, at the historic Lensic Performing Arts Center.  This enchanting ballet will leave you with visions of sugarplums dancing in your head, as well as snowflakes, soldiers, mice, Chinese and Russian dancers and so much more.  Directors Jean-Philippe Malaty and Tom Mossbrucker work every year to out-do the previous year's performance, so this year's show, with a cast of over 60 dancers, actors, circus artists and students of the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet School promises to be more lavish than ever - a perfect way to get into a festive mood for the holidays.

After the show, you may want to head up the street for a stroll around the plaza, along with a stop for tea and a scrumptious pastry at the Plaza Bakery-Haagen-Dazs.  The trees of the Santa Fe Plaza are festooned with colorful lights, adding to the magical mood of The Nutcracker.

Choose from four performance times:  December 11 at 2pm and 7:30pm or December 12 at 1pm and 5pm.

Ticket prices range from $20-$62
